“Sokhom’s message: 2020, a year of new ways of life!”

Sokhom Leang

I attended TYCA Vol. 5 in 2019 and that was the first time I met so many young inspiring Asian youths. It was an eye-opening experience and an unforgettable moment. I was very fortunate enough to meet and learn how the next generation of ASEAN countries and Japan would work together to build an advanced and harmonious society in the future. Returning back from the Camp in late March 2019, I went back to my routinely busy schedule as a teacher and a mother. 2019 was a very busy year for me, yet it was very well-accomplished and I couldn’t believe that we now have come to an end of 2020 in just a blink of an eye. Well, looking back, what have I been through in 2020? The picture below describes how my 2020 has been.

Not much, but more than what I could imagine! 2020 was supposed to be a busier year for me, but what I planned for has been cancelled and I had gone through a new way of life! Not good, yet not too bad neither!

I began my 2020 with a one-week sick leave from work as I was suffering from flu. This was the first time for me to experience this kind of condition. I am a very healthy person. Having the common flu is a rare case for me. Yet, I suffered from a very bad flu in the last two weeks of December 2019 and this continued until the first two weeks of January 2020. As soon as I recovered from my flu, there was news of the first case of Covid-19 reported in Cambodia, and since then life has changed gradually not only for me, but for everybody. Although Cambodia hasn’t experienced a severe lock down, the Covid-19 pandemic has interfered with many aspects of everyone’s daily life.  Social gatherings, public events, the usage of public space, and later schools, just to name a few, were not allowed to be operated the ways they used to be. People became afraid of one another, living in fear of being contaminated by this virus. It was a hard situation, but everyone was trying their best to adapt to a new way of life. At first, I thought Covid-19 is just a new kind of flu, which soon scientists will find pills to cure it. After reading shocking news from China and other European countries about how the Covid-19 pandemic developed and learned that so many people died of Covid-19 and were suffering from it, the feeling of fear kept haunting me. There were a lot of things going on in my head and I couldn’t think clearly at first of how our lives would have to change and cope with this situation.

I work at an international school and what worried me the most was the loss of my income, for schools had to shut down for certain periods of time.  The first few weeks of school closure was supposed to be a very special holiday for a teacher like me, but at that time it wasn’t. All the teachers were trained immediately to use online teaching platforms (zoom, google classroom, class dojo…etc). It was an additional job for us, but I was excited to learn this new skill and new way of teaching students. I was a person who didn’t like to stay on screens, I like working with people and of course I chose a teaching career. Nonetheless, the consequence of this pandemic had brought me to a new way of life, which I had never imagined of, spending most of our time with screens. The environment at work became less busy; lots of planned events were cancelled. Everyone was worried, little job; less money…what’s next? Well, good or bad, a new way of life? One month after another, I have been looking forward to returning back to our normal life, when we could travel freely and visit who we wanted to. Then, the word “New Normal” was introduced to the situation we were in. We had to continue living our life normally, but in a new way. So what’s the “New Normal”? Well, on the bright side, the pandemic has provided a chance for me to update my IT skills, to learn new ways of teaching students, and of course to have more time with family. At the community level, I notice that lots of people are now paying more attention to personal hygiene and putting health as a priority.

After reading the five articles from the TYCA alumni of Cambodia, I have a strong hope that these youths will make a very positive change to the future society. The experience of this pandemic makes them stronger and even adapt better to whatever comes to life in the future. Last but not least, I wish everyone stays safe and healthy physically, mentally and psychologically and get through this hard time together. It is very much appreciated that TYCA initiated the Web Project to keep our voice being heard and make us connected again.
