What TYCA alumni are expected to do by “2040”

Takayuki Enomoto

Teacher, Waseda University High School
Japan

① About myself

I am Taka Enomoto, advisor from Waseda, participated in TYCA Vol.2 (Dec. 2015) and Vol.6 (Dec. 2019).  Maybe you remember me as the one always taking pictures, besides Gentaro-san, the official cameraman.  As I briefly recall my experiences of TYCA, many fond memories come to mind:  Kinnya Monnya dance, Logy & Nomy game, discussions, lectures, presentations, bus tours, museums, meals and parties, downtown walks, and nighttime talks.  Although sometimes frustrating, it was truly an exciting process to get to know the participants and advisors and work together toward the final presentation.  All of you were so enthusiastic and sophisticated.  It has been a treasure of my life to meet people from all walks of East Asian countries.

Some of you remember other advisors from Waseda:  Daichi Shiraishi (Vol.3, 4, 5) and Satoru Sakaki (Vol.5).  We all appreciate the coordinators and managers for inviting our students in the past TYCA programs.  We are thankful for the rich educational experiences we shared with all ASEAN participants and advisors.  We send our sincere regards to all our friends suffering from COVID-19 infection/ difficulties/ restrictions.  Stay safe, friends.  We are here praying for you.

② What TYCA alumni are expected to do by “2040”

TYCA program is designed to empower high school students from ASEAN countries and equip them with “vision 2040”.  “2040” is two decades away from now.  It seems far away, but it is time for you to make difference in this society.

During the TYCA volume 6 (Dec. 2019), I had a chance to give my address to the participants.  I started my talk with a bar graph that showed the amount of greenhouse gas (CO2) emission of the airplanes on which each participant traveled to attend the TYCA in Tokyo.

After recognizing how much greenhouse gas (CO2) emission they produced during the round trip to Tokyo, and how much negative impact they imprinted on the climate environment (one of the main themes of the TYCA program was the preservation of natural environment), I asked them to pay it back in the future.  The method of paying is to remember the following responsibilities:

You have the responsibility

  • to take back the knowledge and skills you learned in TYCA.
  • to keep studying the issues of TYCA programs.
  • to keep in touch with each other.
  • to influence your peers back in your school.
  • to sustain clean water/ air/ energy and pass it on to the next generations.
  • to plan another “TYCA” equivalent program in your own country in the future.

How many of these have you completed so far?  How many of these will you be able to carry out by “2040”?  It is a good time to recall what you have learned during the program, and plan your future as someone who makes a difference.

③ Promote branding of yourself

Let’s take a look at the picture of perfume.  I found these perfume bottles on my wife’s dresser.  Christian Dior, Burberry, Tiffany, Chanel, Elizabeth Arden, etc.  She has a huge collection of perfumes.  (I do not know why she needs so many—hahaha.)  Which one would you choose for yourself?  Would you prefer a fresh citrus to a sweet amora?  Your choice may depend on (mostly) the fragrance character itself, but (partly) on brand image of the manufacturer.  You may not pick an unknown brand, but a prestigious brand.  People tend to trust a well-known label, and “brand” does matter.  Promoting “branding yourself” and creating yourself as a prestigious persona— that is what you should aim at during the next two decades, by “2040”.  You have learned how Toshiba Corporation has grown to be the world class electronics brand when you visited the Toshiba Science Museum.  As TYCA alumni, each of you are destined to become a distinguished brand that stand out in the rising generation.  You have the passion and perspectives to become the one.  We are all looking forward to the day when we see all fellow TYCA alumni stand up as brands in respective fields working together for a better future.

第2回TYCA(2015年12月)及び第6回TYCA(2019年12月)に参加致しました、早稲田のアドバイザー榎本隆之です。
